Breakthrough Battery Powers Electric vehicle for 1,000km

Published:

In a groundbreaking development for the electric vehicle (EV) industry, Shanghai-based Nio has showcased a revolutionary battery that boasts an impressive range of more than 1,000 kilometers on a single charge. The Chinese electric car manufacturer claims that this next-generation battery will enter mass production in April 2024, setting a new standard for range capability in the EV market.

Nio’s CEO, William Li, personally demonstrated the capabilities of this cutting-edge battery by driving the all-electric vehicle an astounding 1,044 kilometers during a 14-hour live-stream event. The journey took the vehicle from Zhejiang province to Fujian province, maintaining an average speed of 84 kilometers per hour. In a separate, non-broadcasted test, the battery reportedly covered an even greater distance, reaching 1,145 kilometers.

Li took to the Chinese social media platform Weibo to share his excitement, stating, “The completion of this endurance challenge proves the product power of the 150kWh ultra-long endurance battery pack.” He highlighted the battery’s position as the one with the highest energy density in mass production globally, underlining its exceptional safety performance.

One of Nio’s distinctive features is its unconventional approach to charging, favoring a battery-swap system over traditional plug-in charging. This innovation aims to address the inconvenience associated with long charging times and contributes to the overall efficiency of electric vehicles.

Customers have the option to purchase a vehicle without a battery and then subscribe to a monthly service fee for access to batteries within Nio’s network. This approach aligns with Nio’s president Qin Lihong’s statement that outright purchase of the new battery would cost 298,000 yuan (£33,000), roughly equivalent to the price of a Tesla Model 3. Nio advocates for the use of a hire scheme, not only for its customers but also as a strategy to promote the growth of the entire electric vehicle industry.

“NIO started battery swap from the very beginning; it has been ready to open up its technologies and infrastructure to the entire industry,” emphasized Li. This commitment to collaboration and technological openness positions Nio as a pioneer in fostering advancements within the EV sector.

As the new battery enters mass production in 2024, it is expected to not only enhance the appeal of Nio’s electric vehicles but also contribute to the broader shift towards sustainable transportation. The combination of extended range, quick battery swaps, and an open approach to technology positions Nio as a key player in driving the evolution of electric mobility. The success of Nio’s ambitious battery technology could potentially influence the strategies of other electric car manufacturers, further accelerating the transition to a greener and more sustainable automotive future.
